What's in a name?
Cosmic rock band, One Eleven Heavy is now a gutsy fruity strain
Breeder and DJ, Mendocino Mike created an awesome new fruity strain but was drawing blanks for a suitable name. A mutual misunderstanding settled the matter and so was dubbed the One Eleven Heavy strain.
Heads Lifestyle: Where are you located?
Mendocino Mike: Laytonville in Mendocino, California.
HL: How did the idea to name one of your strains after the band One Eleven Heavy come about?
MM: It’s hard to come up with a good name for a strain. I was smoking a fatty in the KPFN studio one day when Kevin Marsh, one of the station's founders came in and asked, “What’s that!?” I said, “It’s One Eleven Heavy. He replied, “Fuckin’ great name for a strain!” and I was like, "No, no, that’s the name of the band." And that’s how it got named.
HL: Had you ever heard of the band before?
MM: I discovered One Eleven Heavy on Bandcamp. I played them on air and people really liked them. Before that, I had never heard of them.
HL: What song was it that got your attention and inspired the name?
MM: I think Peaking in the Middle from the Everything’s Better album.
HL: Can you describe your One Eleven Heavy strain?
MM: The strain is a cross of Testarosa from Aficionado Seeds and Cali Seeds SFVOG X BOG. I was looking for a fruity fuel. It’s been four years in the works developing the One Eleven Heavy strain. The shit is sick!
HL: Does the band know that there's a strain of weed named after them?
MM: Yes, the band knows and is very proud. We wanted them to play our cannabis cup here in Laytonville but the fuckin’ Covid shut that down! We were trying to bring the cup back to where it started with the small farmers from the valley.
HL: Where can people find your strains?
MM: You’d have to come to Mendo to get my strains. I used to work with Aficionado as a breeder but legalization put an end to that.
